25 Years of Service
Hewes Library is thrilled to recognize two employees celebrating 25 years of service to Monmouth College!
Mindy Damewood began her Monmouth career in 1995 as a part time library supervisor, and soon transitioned to career services, assisting students in the Wackerle Center for Career, Leadership & Fellowships. Mindy has since returned to Hewes Library, serving our patrons as the Technical Processing Manager.
Marti Carwile has worked in several different offices over the years (Campus Services, Alumni Programs, Development Office) and currently serves as the Acquisitions Manager in Hewes Library. Marti says the best part of working in so many places on campus always comes back to meeting the students and following their growth and success at Monmouth College and post-graduation.
Congratulations!

Banned Books Display
Celebrate Banned Books and Your Freedom to Read!
Hewes Library is
celebrating the freedom to read, highlighting challenged and banned books in a
current display starting September 28th. The display features books challenged
and banned in all types of United States libraries: school, public, and prison.
This year’s display also
features the importance of books in prisons, with information about Monmouth’s
faculty led bookclub with inmates at Galesburg’s Hill Correctional Center. Also highlighted is a 2019 incident of materials removed from the Danville Correctional
Center library. This case study features Monmouth College MLK Jr. Day convocation speaker, Rebecca Ginsburg, who
spearheaded public pressure to reverse the action.
Nationwide, the American Library Association (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 377
challenges to library, school, and university materials in 2019. Monmouth’s
pre-service teachers, and everyone concerned with retaining access to ideas and
information, are encouraged to explore the display and learn more at: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom.
Also part of the week's celebration is a fun online quiz featuring banned literature. The quiz is free, fun, and will end on Saturday, October 3rd, 8pm.

WorldShare/I-Share Tutorials
Over the summer, Hewes Library transitioned to a new interlibrary loan interface (WorldShare Interlibrary Loan) AND a new library catalog system. Both interfaces will continue to evolve as the library tweaks and modifies them to be as useful as possible for our community of researchers.
Here's how to decide which to choose:
- Books and media may be requested via I-Share and WorldShare Interlibrary Loan.
- Articles may only be requested via WorldShare Interlibrary Loan.
Helpful tutorials outlining the basic steps of each process:
·
Video outlining the steps to
create WorldShare Interlibrary Loan requests (articles and books)
·
Video outlining the steps to
request books via I-Share (remember: books only)
·
WorldShare and I-Share guides: https://library.monmouthcollege.edu/home/otherlibraries
Don’t hesitate to stop by the Information Desk in Hewes Library and ask for a librarian if you would like any assistance. Librarians can also be reached via chat, text, email and phone. We are here to help!

Borrowing via I-Share & WorldShare
Hewes Library offers two ways to borrow materials from other Libraries: I-Share and WorldShare.
In brief, I-Share offers Monmouth College patrons the opportunity to search a common catalog, identify materials in approximately 90 academic libraries in Illinois, and request materials directly from those libraries. Materials are delivered Monday - Friday to Hewes Library. Patrons should note that COVID-19 procedures now include a 5 day quarantine of incoming materials.
Patrons receive an email when the borrowed items are ready to pick up at the library information desk.

New Library Catalog!
Hewes Library, along with all CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) institutions, transitioned to a new library catalog interface July 2020.
The catalog is accessible from the library's homepage "Search" box.
The catalog WILL permit borrowing from other I-Share institutions, however, that feature is still being tested for our location. Patrons who wish to borrow materials from other libraries should use the WorldShare interlibrary loan form on the library's homepage. (more about WorldShare)
The new interface has several "scopes" that search distinct and overlapping resources. Scopes include:
Hewes Library Catalog | Searches all physical books, dvds and media available in Hewes Library, and some digital resources (government documents, Monmouth-owned Ebooks). Learn more |
Everything | Searches Hewes Library-owned physical items, I-Share Libraries catalogs, some Ebook collections, AND popular and scholarly journal articles (some citation-only, some full-text) from select databases. |
I-Share Libraries Catalog | Searches materials owned in I-Share consortium libraries (Illinois academic libraries). Book materials are requestable via I-Share. Ebooks are not available to borrow due to publisher restrictions. Learn more |
Articles | Searches millions of popular and scholarly journal articles (some citation-only, some full-text) accessible through Hewes Library databases. |
Course Reserves | Searches a subset of materials on reserve for a Monmouth College course. |
More information on the new catalog interface can be found at https://library.monmouthcollege.edu/catalogs. Additional tutorials coming soon!

Everyone is invited!
Below is a bit of background on Singleton from the African American Almanac available on the Hewes Library CREDO Reference resource:
"Singleton was soon approached by Columbia Pictures to sell the film rights to Boyz n the Hood, his original screenplay and college thesis. Singleton agreed, but only if he could be the movie's director. The movie was released in July of 1991 to mixed critical reviews. Although its first showings were marred by movie-house violence, the film garnered Singleton an Academy Award nomination for best director. He became the youngest director and the first African American to be so honored."

The Great Book Move to Hewes Library
Over 120,000 volumes were carried from the Carnegie Library (Poling Hall) to the college's newest facility: Hewes Library. Classes were cancelled while over 800 volunteers marched up and down the hill carrying books against negative windchill. The new library opened for business the next day! What an extraordinary accomplishment!
Visit the west lobby of Hewes Library on Tuesday, January 21st to see this slideshow, and be sure to venture to the upper level display cases (west wall) to enjoy an archival exhibit of memorabilia celebrating the history of Hewes Library.
