Spring Break 2010

Hewes Library will be operating on our normal break schedule for Spring Break. The hours are available on the library's website and are listed below.

• Friday, March 5: 7:45am to 4:30pm
• Saturday, March 6 & Sunday, March 7: Closed
• Monday, March 8 - Friday, March 12: 8am - 4:30pm
• Saturday, March 13: Closed
• Sunday, March 14: 6pm - midnight.
• Monday, March 15: 7:45am - midnight and the library returns to regular hours.

On Display: Boy Scouts

In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America are celebrating 100 years of scouting adventure! A collection of materials is currently on display in the East Lobby Display Cases of Hewes Libary.

Today, over 840,000 boy scouts are organized into 40,000+ scout troops. Items from the Hewes Library collection are available for checkout. Popular Magazines Update

Over the last few weeks, many of the new titles for the library’s light reading magazine section have arrived. Among the titles now on the shelves are: Brides, Entertainment Weekly, Game Informer, Glamour, People, Popular Mechanics, Vogue and Women’s Health. The next time you need a break from reading for class, come by and browse through a few of these new titles over a cup of coffee or tea in the Hewes Library Coffee Shop or curled up in one of the large comfortable chairs on the third floor.

More titles are due to arrive over the next few weeks, so be sure to check the shelves to see what’s been added. Some of the titles still to come are: Better Homes & Gardens, Frommer’s Budget Travel, Outdoor Life, Men’s Health and Wired.

On Display: The First Ladies

Currently on display in the East Lobby Display Cases is a collection of materials from the library's collection relating to the First Ladies. Many of the items come from the Circulating Collection and are available for checkout.

If you are interested in more cultural and policitical information while these ladies were in the White House, many items found in the Reference Collection may be of use. Additionally, the library subscribes to several online reference databases that can be accessed from the library's homepage.

What are you reading? Dust & Shadow

Hewes Library Staff Pick: Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson by Lyndsay Faye. This title is currently part of the ScotsRead Collection on the Main Floor of the library.

Author Lindsey Faye brings Sherlock Holmes to life in her new novel. Faye pits Holmes against Jack the Ripper in this thrilling novel set in Victorian London. In a race against time, Holmes and his associates become entangled in an urgent case where the lives of the London's poorest are at stake. For fans of Holmes and Watson, this story will not disappoint!

Art & Artifacts: Rome in Miniature

A selection of small-scale Roman sculptures and artifacts from the James Christie Shields Collection is now on exhibit in Gallery 203. In the exhibit are a number of bronzes, including a coin featuring the profile of Hadrian Sestertius, a mask of Dionysis, an exquisite and tiny (!) rearing horse, and a priest figure from Roman Britain. Among the marbles are a lovely head of a matron from Roman Egypt. Additionally, there is an impressive carved wood male figure, also from Roman Egypt.

Several of these works have not been on exhibit here before, so it is hoped that you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to see these treasures, small in scale but large in significance.

New Items at Hewes Library

New items are added to the Hewes Library collection on a continual basis. Each week a selection of new items are displayed in the new book display case. The new book display case is located on the main level of Hewes Library next to the ScotsRead collection.

Current Newspapers

Do you miss knowing about happenings in your home region or want to know what is happening here in the Monmouth/Galesburg area? Or are you curious about the latest national or international news? Then check out the newspaper section of the library. Located across from the Current Periodicals section near the coffee shop, you can find the current editions of several local, regional and national newspapers.

Among the local newspapers subscribed to by the library are the Monmouth Daily Review Atlas, the Galesburg Register Mail and the Zephyr (Galesburg). Of regional interest are the Peoria Journal Star and the Chicago Tribune. For those with a taste for national news, the library offers subscriptions to the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post weekly edition. If you are interested in international news check out the Guardian Weekly (Great Britain) or practice your Spanish with the El Pais Weekly (Spain).

Back issues dating up to three months are stored in the back of the library. Just ask at the front desk if, for instance, you want to look at what the Chicago Tribune had to say about the Cubs 2009 season and you missed reading it when it first came out.

Gale's AccessMyLibrary iPhone App

Gale Publishing Company has recently unveiled an iPhone application for their AccessMyLibrary mobile platform. The AccessMyLibrary iPhone application will allow patrons to access Gale's scholarly resources. Using GPS technology, the system will identify libraries within a 10 mile radius of the patron's current location and allow users to access the Gale resources of local libraries. Changes to Print Journals & Magazine Section

You should be aware that, In addition to the new collection of light reading (popular magazines) added to the periodicals section, the library made a few more changes to its journal collection over the break.

The following Psychology journals were cancelled in print format, as we receive the current issues electronically via the PsychINFO database: Behavioral Neuroscience, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Comparative Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning Memory and Cognition, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Bulletin and Psychological Review. Back issues for articles published prior to 2010 are available at either PsychINFO or downstairs in the bound journals collection.

The magazines Democracy and Education, Dr. Dobbs and Far Eastern Economic Review ceased publication during 2009 and no longer are found on our shelves. Further, the library cancelled its subscription to the magazine Science News, due to an extremely large price increase. Readers of Science News should check New Scientist, Scientific American or the American Journal of Science for articles similar to those found in Science News.

Finally, the library started a subscription to the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, (JOPERD), the leading publication in those fields.
