Rainbow Book Month

Rainbow Book Month™ is a nationwide celebration of the authors and writings that reflect the lives and experiences of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, and queer community. 

This June, Hewes Library highlighted a selection of LGBTQ non-fiction and fiction titles accessible via the Hewes Library catalog. Contact reference@monmouthcollege.edu if you see a title you'd like to check out!

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Hewes Library is sharing recommendations from our Monmouth College community.

Assistant Professor of History, Dr. Michelle Damian, shared a few favorite novels and authors:

Lisa See:  Island of Sea Women, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Gail Tsukiyama:  Street of a Thousand Blossoms 

Nancy Kim:  Like Wind Against Rock

Celeste Ng:  Little Fires Everywhere

Julie Otsuka:  When the Emperor Was Divine  and a non-fiction counterpart, memories of Japanese internment camps in the United States, Whispered Silences: Japanese Americans and World War II by Gary Okihiro.

Last, but not least, the lighthearted Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan.

Many Voices of the Past Discussion

In conjunction with Galesburg Public Library’s 2021 NEA Big Read program, Hewes Library is partnering with Professor Amy de Farias and the students of HIST 300 “Women in Latin America” to host a discussion of the Julia Alvarez novel In the Time of the Butterflies.

The Many Voices of the Past:  Historical Fiction and its Role in Democratizing the Past

In the Time of Butterflies author, Julia Alvarez, writes a fictionalized account of the Mirabal sisters and their heroic efforts to oust one of the most brutal dictators of Latin America, Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic (1930-1961).  Alvarez manages to capture the complicated lives of the sisters and other Dominicans during this tumultuous and violent period.  Her novel can be viewed as an excellent model of historical fiction; it illustrates how literature can provide the reader with a more detailed and personal glimpse of the past. Academic history, on the other hand, rarely succeeds in opening the doors of the past to allow its readers the opportunity to vicariously experience the lives of real historical figures.

A variety of informational displays can be found in Hewes Library this month.

"LGBTQ: History, Life Stories and Performance"
A selection of library materials on the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer movements in the United States, with a special focus on autobiographies and the performing arts. This display features QR codes for many of the materials on display, which will lead the user to the actual item either physically in Hewes Library, available to borrow from the I-Share catalog, or to utilize electronically.


"Books You Always Meant to Read" 
A selection of books we always meant to read, but haven't...yet! Check them out, and add YOUR to-do title to the growing suggestion list.

"My MC Memories"
A rotating exhibition of scrapbooks from the Monmouth College Archives, a fantastic peek into these cultural artifacts.

 

And finally, on the main floor, we are showcasing pieces from our James Christie Shields Collection (two beautiful porcelain pieces from Korea) and our Takashi Komatsu Collection (two gorgeous Hiroshige woodcuts of winter scenes in Japan).

EBL eBook Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) Pilot Project: More eBooks!

Through a consortial project, the EBL eBook Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) Pilot Project is now available to Monmouth College students, faculty and staff.  Hewes Library patrons may now access any of over 29,000 Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) E-Books through the Hewes Library Catalog or the I-Share Catalog.

MC users will be prompted to authenticate using your MC network username/password the first time an EBL eBook record is selected.

The pilot project is funded by the Consortium of Academic & Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).  Hewes Library, Monmouth College, is a Governing Member institution of the CARLI consortium.

Don't forget! Return your library materials

As the spring semester winds down, don't forget to return your Hewes Library, I-Share, and Interlibrary Loan materials once you are done with them.  You can return materials to the library's circulation desk or drop boxes are available inside the library and outside, on the west terrace.

Don't Forget! Return your Library Books

As the semester comes to a close, do not forget to stop by the library and return your library books.  If you do, you will avoid overdue notices on your library materials over Winter Break.

You can renew items online through the My Account feature in the library's catalog if the materials are not overdue. If the materials are overdue, please return the items to the library and, if there is not a hold on the item, it should be possible for you to renew the item.  If you choose to renew books and keep them over break, please remember to login to your account to renew materials online.
