"The Life Hermetic" in Everett Gallery

Currently featured in the Len G. Everett Gallery in Hewes Library is an exhibition of drawings by Beloit faculty member, Scott Espeseth.

The Life Hermetic features sixteen watercolor drawings by the artist. Espeseth is the Dr. Richard K. and Gloria T. Nystrom Professorial Chair in Fine Arts at Beloit College, and he has been teaching all levels of drawing and printmaking since 2002. More of Scott’s work can be seen here, at his website.

The exhibition will be open through April 1st (see gallery hours below), and Scott will give a public talk through Zoom on Friday, March 19th at 2pm.

Student Art Show Open

The Juried Student Art Exhibition is now open! 25 artists entered a total of 57 artworks. 39 pieces from 19 artists were accepted into the show. The show is on view at the Len G. Everett Gallery in Hewes Library through March 1st. See gallery hours below.

In addition to the variety of awards selected by the juror, the Buchanan Center for the Arts is sponsoring a People’s Choice Award. Voting takes place through a Facebook Event page. Just “Like” your favorite artwork; or post your own photo from the show.  Awards will be announced at the end of February. 

 

Wunderlich Art in Gallery

Art Exhibition, Connections, Open

A new exhibition titled, Connections, is now open through April 3, 2020 in the Everett Gallery of Hewes Library.

About the artist:

Guadalupe Lanning Robinson is a quilt-maker and ceramic artist from Huntsville, Alabama.

She writes:

A great fascination with different-colored clays and the textures that can be produced with stoneware has led me to experiment with and study clays for the past thirty years. Continuous respect for the material is a factor I try to maintain in my work. I also have a great reverence for the idea of “craftsmanship” and it is a strong element when creating my work. My work has developed from the respect I have for clay and the joy I experience when working with it.

                I was born and grew up in Mexico City, a place with strong cultural ties and great tradition, full of sights, energy, sounds and flavor. Bringing together my Mexican heritage with the richness and tranquility of the Deep South has enriched my life. This constantly moves my work toward blending the two cultures.

This exhibition is part of the Visions & Verse program: celebrating collaborations between Artists & Poets.  Poet, James Miller Robinson, will join Guadalupe for special presentations and class visits in April.

The exhibition's  reception will take place on April 3rd 3pm-4:30pm. All are invited.

New Exhibits: Qur'an and Bookmaking

Hewes Library has several new exhibits to view on the main floor.

West entrance: 1788 Handwritten Qur'an


This exhibition case will rotate often to showcase materials from the Monmouth College Special Collections & Archives. Currently on display is a handwritten copy of the Qur'an donated to Monmouth College by Reverend Gulian Lansing, who also donated the college's copy of the Conopus Stone.












East entrance: "Books as Art"


Currently on display are handmade books created in Professor Stephanie Baugh's ARTD 231. Examples of accordian, coptic, and stab binding are displayed throughout the two cases. This exhibit will be available throughout the month of January.

Student Art Show Reception

The Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition is currently on view in the Len G. Everett Gallery in Hewes Library.

Poetry Reading & Discussion Monday 9/9

“Shale Play: Poems and Photographs from the Fracking Fields” is currently on display in the upper level Everett Gallery of Hewes Library, displaying the work of Steven Rubin and Julia Spicher Kasdorf.  The exhibit showcases work from their collaborative book that documents issues of fracking in northwestern and central Pennsylvania.

Art Exhibition Opens

A new art exhibition opens Friday, January 18^th, from 3:00-4:30, in the Len G. Everett Gallery of Hewes Library.  The opening reception, gallery talk 3:30pm by artist Elizabeth Folk, is free and open to the public.

Statement from the artist:

"You Are A Monument explores contemporary notions of monumentality and sovereignty in a politically complex time. The works include an installation of sixteen flags, a rideable plush “equestrian statue,” and an accompanying performative video. The flags combine text from locally-sourced Illinois personal ads and symbols, created from randomly selected objects “for sale” on local Craigslist ads. Random juxtapositions of everyday objects and missed connections are re-presented utilizing flags, “chrome” poles, and a “bronze” statue on a plinth: the language of power. The toy-like equestrian statue evokes mental images of an out of control childish icon. The video seems playful at first, but as it slows the “horse” and rider fling about violently and the audio reveals an inner and unexpected menace.  In an iconoclastic time where historic monuments celebrating ugly parts of American history are highly contested, the statue and video seek to defamiliarize the equestrian statue itself as an iconic symbol. By monumentalizing the everyday interactions of the people of the greater Monmouth area, the exhibition raises the question of how and why we choose to celebrate our history."
