New: Interactive Anatomy Tool

Hewes Library is now providing access to the Gale Interactive Human Anatomy tool.

Interactive Human Anatomy allows students to examine virtual 3D dissections and immerse themselves in interactive research. This tools can be used for in-classroom demonstrations or help with homework and research assignments.

Interactive Human Anatomy allows users to:

• delve deep into concepts with tools to zoom, rotate, and explore models
• experience guided interactive lessons aligned with course curriculum
• view relevant reference content from Gale for further study and research
• use self-assessments to ensure concept comprehension
• access resources on their computer at any time through multiple web browsers

Monmouth College users can access this tool from the Hewes Library website Databases A-Z tab and find the resource under "Interactive Human Anatomy".

Statista: Visual Statistical Source

Statista is a statistics portal containing diverse data and facts from over 18,000 sources, including market research, trade publications, scientific journals, and government databases. 

In addition to being one of the largest statistic portals, Statista contains marvelous color info-graphic capabilities allowing the researcher to pull dynamic statistics straight into a paper or presentation. See sample below.

Each statistic in the database provides source information so researchers can reference the original data and learn more.  Find Statista on the library homepage, Databases A-Z tab.

Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection

Hewes Library provides access to two digital archives of U.S. Hispanic history: Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection. 


This collection "draws its content from the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project, the largest national project ever to locate, preserve, and disseminate Latino-Hispanic culture of the United States in its written form, from colonial times to 1960."

Accessible on the EbscoHost interface, the databases are located on the Hewes Library homepage "Databases A-Z".

Series 1 "presents a digital collection of historical content - 17th century to 1960 - pertaining to Hispanic history, literature, political commentary, and culture in the United States. This collection conveys the creative life of U.S. Latinos and Hispanics – shedding new light on the intellectual vigor and traditional values that have characterized them from the earliest moments of this country’s history through contemporary times. The Latino-Hispanic American Experience offers a unique approach, focusing exclusively on the Latino-Hispanic history in the U.S." 


Series 2 "presents thematic content - 18th century through 20th century - focusing on the evolution of Hispanic civil rights, religious thought, and the growing presence of women writers from the late 19th and 20th centuries. Rare and relevant books and newspapers – including rare anarchist newspapers – are presented in their original form."

Content includes:

• Approximately 60,000 historical articles
• Hundreds of rare books by Latino-Hispanic Americans
• Hundreds of political and religious pamphlets and broadsides
• Content written in Spanish (80%) and English (20%)
• Content indexed and searchable in Spanish and English
• Over 3,000 issues of rare historical newspapers and periodicals, including over 75,000 pages of content
• Over 250,000 pages of personal and organizational manuscript content

JSTOR: Journals & Books

JSTOR, a Hewes Library database, has become synonymous with "full text" for many researchers. And it is!  While the database searches cover-to-cover scans of select scholarly journals, also included are over 40,000 scholarly ebook titles in full text, adding depth and breadth to your research.

Both collections are searched automatically in the default search, so need to change any settings or learn new tricks, but be sure to contact the Reference desk (reference@monmouthcollege.edu) if you do require assistance (quick guide for more information).

The Times (London) Digital Archive gets a facelift

The Times (London) Digital Archive is an online, full-text facsimile of more than 200 years of the Times, one of the most highly regarded resources for eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century news coverage, with every page of every issue from 1785 to 2012 (6 year embargo).

This historical newspaper archive allows researchers an unparalleled opportunity to search and view the best-known and most cited newspaper, in fact the oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication!

This interface has recently transformed (see image below) for a more streamlined general and advanced search. Consider this database as a primary resource complement to social, political and cultural history courses.

Flipster is a digital platform available via web browser and Android / iOS app.

Flipster: Digital Magazine Platform

Hewes Library has current subscriptions to eight magazine titles in EBSCO’s Flipster database, which provides full-image access to current periodicals (mostly popular and trade periodicals). Access to Flipster is provided on the Databases A-Z link, as well as the rotating graphic on the library's homepage (see below).

Flipster is accessible on your personal computer and on mobile devices via the website...and is accessible via a Flipster app for Android or iOS device. (see "Flipster Digital Magazines" in the app store)

Global Sea Level Rise Simulation Map: an interactive map that shows which areas would be under water if sea level rises a specific amount. You can select a value of sea level rise using the drop down box in the upper left corner of the map. 

New Digital Resource: Loeb Classical Library

Hewes Library is pleased to now offer unlimited digital access to the Loeb Classical Library.

A searchable digital library of over 520 classical texts, the Digital Loeb includes literature, poetry, history, travel, philosophy, and oratory, published with the original Greek/Latin text on the left and the English translation on the right. Browse the collection by author and title or conduct a keyword search.

Digitizing History Department Slides

History Club President Brody Anderson is working diligently to digitize a collection of long forgotten 35mm color slide images created by History Professor Bill Urban and former professor Mary Crow. “For too long, these slides have been sitting in a box in a back office” said Brody. “It is going to be great to have these slides, which archive the travels of the last 50 years by both Dr. Urban and Dr. Crow, online for anyone to view” he added.

All slides will be uploaded to a Monmouth College Archives Google photos account (https://goo.gl/photos/roECdPyAAT2UBR5B7) so anyone may view them at any time.

Resource Spotlight: American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection

The newest online collection accessible via the Hewes Library website, American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection, "provides digital access to the most comprehensive collection of American periodicals published between 1684 and 1912."

Researchers may view scanned images from periodicals published from the Colonial Era through the Civil War/Reconstruction, all fully keyword searchable via the familiar EBSCO interface.

This resource provides Monmouth College researchers primary sources "rich content detailing American history and culture" in areas such as advertising, health, women's issues, science, the history of slavery, religious history, and culture and the arts.

From the Archives: The Naval Flight School

The Naval Flight School Collection was added to the Monmouth College Digital Collections and contains photographs and materials related to the US Naval Flight Preparatory School and the US Navy Academic Refresher Unit.

Student Karrah Kuykendall worked under the direction of Lynn Daw, Technical Services Librarian and Archivist, to complete her HIST 390 course preserving and digitizing the Naval Flight School Collection.

During WWII, Monmouth College served as one of seventeen institutions selected by the U.S. Navy as a Naval Flight Preparatory School. In 1944, the NFPS transitioned to a Naval Academic Refresher Unit. This collection reflects on the important role of MC in the war effort and is a unique glimpse into life on the Monmouth College campus during the war.

A large portion of the collection is the Wing Tips Newsletter, which was written by the cadets and features information on WWII, maintaining grades, and social events on Monmouth College's campus.

Digital Public Library of America

The Digital Public Library of America recently launched and strives to collect and make available the contents of libraries around the country.  It's mission states:

"The Digital Public Library of America brings together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, and makes them freely available to the world. It strives to contain the full breadth of human expression, from the written word, to works of art and culture, to records of America’s heritage, to the efforts and data of science. The DPLA aims to expand this crucial realm of openly available materials, and make those riches more easily discovered and more widely usable and used, through its three main elements:
1. A portal that delivers students, teachers, scholars, and the public to incredible resources, wherever they may be in America. Far more than a search engine, the portal provides innovative ways to search and scan through the united collection of millions of items, including by timeline, map, format, and topic.
2. A platform that enables new and transformative uses of our digitized cultural heritage. With an application programming interface (API) and maximally open data, the DPLA can be used by software developers, researchers, and others to create novel environments for learning, tools for discovery, and engaging apps.
3. An advocate for a strong public option in the twenty-first century. For most of American history, the ability to access materials for free through public libraries has been a central part of our culture, producing generations of avid readers and a knowledgeable, engaged citizenry. We found the University of Washington Libraries Marbled Paper Patterns collection interesting.  Pop over and take a look at the history of each pattern as well as examples of the papers and colors available.

Digital Collections Highlight: John Mazza Historic Surfboard Collection

Monmouth College is not alone in creating digital collections of special materials and items unique to their library.  Currently, we started our collection with our yearbooks, catalogs, and student newspapers.  We thought that is would be fun to highlight other special digital collections of unique materials across the web.

Pepperdine University Libraries feature the John Mazza Historic Surfboard Collection in their digital collections.  The collection of surfboards follows surfboard technology and changes with examples ranging from the 1910s to the 1980s.
