What makes Web of Science Core Collection unique?

Primary Source Databases Added

New primary source databases available via Gale!

Hewes Library recently purchased access to five new primary source databases, outstanding resources for for historical, sociological, and cultural research.

The Times (London) Digital Archive 1785-2012 Full-image and fully searchable access to daily newspaper The Times (London). Coverage: 1785 through a 6 year embargo. 19th Century U.S. Newspapers Full-image and fully searchable access to 19th century United States newspapers, featuring over 500 titles portraying a broad depiction of life in the 1800's. Useful for research in American history, media, politics, and society, placing particular emphasis on such topics as the American Civil War, African-American culture and history, Western migration and Antebellum-era life. Archives of Sexuality & Gender: LGBTQ History & Culture Since 1940 Full-text access to primary source content on social, political, health, and legal issues impacting LGBTQ communities around the world, including the gay rights movement, activism, and the HIV/Aids crisis. Sources include newsletters, papers, government documents, manuscripts, pamphlets from over 35 countries.

Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Transnational Archive
Full-image and fully searchable primary source materials focused on the history of slavery, including the abolitionist movement, the anti- and pro-slavery arguments of the period, and the debates on the subject of colonization. Materials indexed include books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and manuscripts for a multinational perspective. Coverage: 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Women's Studies Archive: Women's Issues and Identities
Full-text and fully searchable primary sources focusing on women's history during the 19th and 20th centuries. Contents include diaries, letters, photographs, newspapers, and periodicals presenting a record of the issues that have affected women and women's movements.

National Library Week (April 8-14)

Celebrate National Library Week at Hewes Library!

Stop by the library all week for these events celebrating National Library Week.

Monday: Free copies of the NEA Big Read book, The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears will be available at the Reference Desk (while supplies last!) Learn more about Big Read activities in our area, sponsored by the Galesburg Public Library.

Tuesday:  National Library Workers Day celebrates the contributions of our staff (including our student staff). Come give your favorite library worker a high-five!

Wednesday: Scotty, the library mascot, turns 18! Scotty was dedicated on April 11, 2000, decorated by Professor Mary Phillips and Library Director Rick Sayre. He's been a popular pig on campus ever since. In lieu of gifts, Scotty is accepting donations for the Warren County Public Library. Stop by for some candy corn and to make a donation, however great or small!

Friday:  Library Director Rick Sayre shares what he has learned about our Canopus Stone over the past twenty years, how it found its way Monmouth, and what happened after it arrived.  Learn why the Canopus Stone has been considered the second-most important discovery next to the Rosetta Stone for 19^th century archaeology! Need a distraction from studying or a reason to walk to the library?

A variety of informational displays can be found in Hewes Library this month.

"LGBTQ: History, Life Stories and Performance"
A selection of library materials on the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer movements in the United States, with a special focus on autobiographies and the performing arts. This display features QR codes for many of the materials on display, which will lead the user to the actual item either physically in Hewes Library, available to borrow from the I-Share catalog, or to utilize electronically.


"Books You Always Meant to Read" 
A selection of books we always meant to read, but haven't...yet! Check them out, and add YOUR to-do title to the growing suggestion list.

"My MC Memories"
A rotating exhibition of scrapbooks from the Monmouth College Archives, a fantastic peek into these cultural artifacts.

 

And finally, on the main floor, we are showcasing pieces from our James Christie Shields Collection (two beautiful porcelain pieces from Korea) and our Takashi Komatsu Collection (two gorgeous Hiroshige woodcuts of winter scenes in Japan).
